Interview questions[]
Where does the name MrBeast come from?
MB: I don't have a cool story, it's just like Xbox Live Gamertag, it was like "MrBeast6000", and then I just got rid of the "6000".
What was your childhood like?
MB: I don't remember too much. I was born in Kansas but like, my channel and everything, I did all in North Carolina once I moved there.
Were you always interested in making videos?
MB: No, it was about around 12, I watched some YouTubers, WoodysGamertag, I used to watch his Call of Duty videos and then... I don't know, I just... I watch a lot of YouTube.
Did you always want to be a YouTuber?
MB: 100%, always a YouTuber. I mean.. what beats making videos for a living? You literally get to do whatever you want.
How did your parents feel when you first started?
MB: It's mostly my Mom. She didn't know I did YouTube until 10,000 subscribers, which is weird 'cuz I was like really young but I just kept it from her, and then when I first told her about it, she would just like, didn't believe me. Over time, she has gotten used to it, especially now that she like works for me, uh you know, I would... I wanted to just retire her but she's the type of person she, you know, she doesn't want to just take money, she wants to help and stuff. And I appreciate her, she does a lot.
What would you be doing if you were not a YouTuber?
MB: I mean... probably college. Yeah, 100% college, I'd be miserable. I went for two weeks, and I was... I hated it.
How did you grow your channel?
MB: Literally from the time I was 12 till now, I've just reinvested everything I made and things just literally got crazier and crazier and crazier, and the views just kept going up, like if you just literally look at the first video, it's just a slow progression.
What does a successful video look like?
MB: The goal is more to be as entertaining and you know, engaging to the audience, which typically switching things up works best but I mean, if things work like I did like 15 Twitch donation videos like people liked it, people are enjoying it you know, we're helping people it's... you know, it's all around just a good thing.
What's a day in your life like?
MB: Every day is different so there is no like routine like, one day I wake up in the desert and we spend 24 hours in desert, the next day I wake up, I mean, we're going to Antarctica soon for a video just for fun, so you don't need like, there's not even like a slight bit of coherency.
What's it like working with the squad everyday?
MB: I try to incorporate them in the content 'cuz they help me a lot, yeah. So it's like a win-win all around.
How do you come up with ideas for videos?
MB: There's tons of methods you could uh, I like to like flip through a dictionary and Iike, I was flipping through it and I saw the word "prison" and I was like, just go to prison you know, so that's one method. There's tons of methods really, you just gotta study your thoughts 'cos like, that's all it is, it's just what you think about and what inspires you.
Why do you give away money?
MB: One of the reasons I like giving away money is I just like to see how people react like, when you just hand someone 10 grand like, it's yours, like what do they do? You know some people don't believe you, some people think it's fake and it's just fun, so that is probably one of the bigger reasons but it's also just fun to help people.
How do you feel about money now?
MB: I am numb to money. I give away so much money now that like a thousand dollars doesn't really feel like much to me 'cos I like spend a hundred thousand dollars in those videos.
Weirdest splurges?
MB: Splurges, I don't know, but the weirdest things would be the hundred million Orbeez or actually when we tried to fly with a hundred leaf blowers, that was... that was a bit weird.
Are you into "nice" things?
MB: I went through that phase where like I bought nice clothes and I drove an i8 but I don't like attention. At the moment, I feel like I live with very un... unmaterialistic life.
Do you think fame and success has changed you?
MB: Of course it has but I don't think in a negative way.
Goals?
MB: I do want to make a lot of money. I also feel like... like dying with a lot of money's a little dumb like, what's the point? I hopefully would make tens of millions of dollars through YouTube invested, turned into hundreds of millions and then before, you know, die, just do fun things like that.
Where will you be in 5 years?
MB: I want to have a hundred million subscribers one day.
Best advice for aspiring creators?
MB: Just do things that people want to watch and put a lot of effort into your videos. You'll get more views than if you just, you know, half a-s-s... I don't know if I can curse, videos every day.
What's your favorite browser extension?
MB: It's Honey, it saves me a lot of money.
