Life[]
Matthew Robert Patrick was born in Medina, Ohio, and is an only child. He has Polish, Czech, and Slovak ancestry. He was given the nickname "MatPat" in sixth grade. As a child, MatPat was interested in both theater and video games. MatPat was the valedictorian of his high school. He attended Duke University in Durham, North Carolina, with an academic scholarship. MatPat graduated from Duke in 2009, where he double-majored in theater and psychology with a concentration in neuroscience.
MatPat married Stephanie Cordato, whom he met at Duke, in 2012. They have a son, who was born in 2018. The family currently divides their time between California and North Carolina.
On YouTube[]
MatPat dreamed of becoming an actor from a young age. After graduating from college, he moved to New York to make that dream a reality. After a not-so-successful stint as a theater actor, MatPat decided to peruse YouTube instead, and started Game Theory in 2011. This endeavor, which proved successful, would later expand into other channels, such as Film Theory, Food Theory, and Style Theory.
MatPat retired as the host of the Theorist channels in March 2024, in order to spend time with his family and peruse other projects. The hosting duties are now shared by the rest of the Theorist team, with each host focusing on their own channel.
